South Shore Health’s Community Exercise Program is marking a milestone this June – 25 years of helping people stay active and healthy through its diverse fitness class offerings.
To celebrate, the community is invited to an Open House event Wednesday, June 4 at the Center for Physical Wellness, 78 Main St. in Weymouth.
“We’re looking forward to celebrating this anniversary with the community and showcasing our classes,” said program manager and instructor Jennifer Logan, who has been with the Community Exercise Program since the beginning.
What began as a pool class for people with arthritis, has grown into a robust exercise program featuring 25 different gym, aquatic and virtual classes for all ages and ability levels.
From prenatal pool classes for expectant moms and strength training for seniors, to programs like Heart Healthy and Joint Motion and Flexibility – specifically geared for people with cardiovascular issues, or those preparing for or recovering from a total joint replacement – there is an exercise class to fit most people’s wellness needs and schedules, Logan said.
Led by exercise therapists in small group settings, all classes are designed to help build strength, flexibility and endurance and are personalized for each participant based on their needs and abilities.
Over the years, the program has continued to grow and evolve, introducing new classes to meet the needs of the community.
Forced to shut down during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Community Exercise Program adapted and reemerged stronger, by leaning on masking, social distancing and launching virtual exercise classes and hybrid sessions that people could attend in person or on a laptop in their living room.
“People were so starved for connection at that time, they were willing to do anything to come back and have some sense of community and control,” Logan recalled.
Community is in the name and at the heart of the program, she said.
“My vision was to create an exercise program for people who want to take care of themselves and be part of a community where they feel supported on their wellness journey.”
Logan is proud she has built a program that people enjoy and have been loyal to for many years. She hopes the Open House will introduce more of the community to the exercise program.
“This is a great opportunity for people to see our classes in action, learn more about our fitness offerings, and start a healthy new routine.”
People can drop in throughout the day to view our classes and enjoy light refreshments and giveaways, Logan said. Pool tours will be available that day (or by appointment) for those interested in the aquatic programs.
