Neonatal Intensive Care
Caring for the South Shore’s Most Vulnerable Patients
The Messina Family Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at South Shore Hospital is the first and only Level III NICU located in a community hospital in Massachusetts. The Level III Messina Family NICU and the Level II Andrade Family Special Care Nursery enable us to care for babies born at any time in pregnancy who have a wide range of medical conditions.
The unit is staffed by doctors, nurses, and respiratory therapists with specific training in the care of ill, premature, and recovery newborns. Our NICU doctors are dually affiliated with both South Shore Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital.
Parents are core members of their newborn’s care team. Our NICU is open to parents 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Overnight rooms are available. Together with parents, the NICU staff provides a warm and nurturing environment with parents involved in the daily care of their infants, frequent Kangaroo Care (also known as skin-to-skin care), and a dedicated NICU Lactation Service.
We also offer the AngelEye Camera System – an internet-based, secure video and audio solution on each bassinet that allows families and friends to interact with hospitalized newborns 24 hours a day from their computer, laptop, tablet, or smart phone.
We are proud to provide a warm and nurturing environment for babies and their families.
