Putting Mom at the Center of the Childbirth Team

Laboring mom and her delivery team

The goal of Team Birth is for all families to have a safe and dignified birth. This approach puts YOU at the center of the team. Discussions and decision-making are centered around mom, with input from her support team, provider, and nurse.

The Team communicates using a Labor and Delivery Planning Board. This board is updated routinely during team discussions so important information is visible to all team members.

Information includes:

  • Names of all team members
  • Your preferences
  • Plan of care for mom, baby, and labor progress
  • Labor timeline
  • Next assessment

This approach has improved the experience of our families. At South Shore Health, 95 percent of laboring women reported feeling comfortable sharing their preferences and opinions with the doctor/midwife and nurse, and 92 percent of laboring women felt their doctor/midwife and nurse talked about their labor in a way they could understand.

We're proud to be the first healthcare organization in the United States to pilot this model of care, in partnership with Ariadne Labs.
