Pregnancy & Childbirth

The childbirth experience you want. Delivered on the South Shore.

Maternity

Whether you want to work with an experienced certified nurse midwife or OB/GYN, South Shore Health knows that every woman has a vision for her pregnancy and childbirth experience. We deliver over 3,000 infants every year—more than any other hospital in the region.

We offer a choice of community-based providers with locations across the South Shore, including those that practice at The Women’s Center of South Shore Medical Center.

When things don't go as expected, we have the expertise to care for you and your baby, right here on the South Shore.

For expectant mothers facing pregnancy-related risks or complications that require a special level of attention, our comprehensive Maternal-Fetal Medicine Program offers high-risk pregnancy services, including the latest in maternal and fetal screening, and consultative services.

South Shore Hospital opened the state's first Obstetrics Emergency Department, which is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to women who are at least 20 weeks gestation and are experiencing a pregnancy-related emergency.

We are also home to Southeastern Massachusetts’ only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)—staffed 24 hours a day by on-site, board-certified neonatologists who are dually affiliated with both South Shore Hospital and Boston Children's Hospital to care for ill or premature infants.

Parents are encouraged to fill out the Birth Certificate Parent Worksheet before arriving to the hospital for your birth. You can complete this form anytime in your pregnancy and mail it to the birth registrar.

We offer many resources for growing families, including our prenatal classes, Infant and Child CPR Classes, information about your first few days with your baby, grandparent classes, and new mothers' groups. You can also find a list of medications safe during pregnancy here.
