South Shore Health is pleased to announce that Alan McKim, Founder, Executive Chairman, and Chief Technology Officer of Clean Harbors, is the recipient of this year’s New England Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (NEAHP) Distinguished Service to Philanthropy Award.
Nominated by the South Shore Health Foundation, the visionary entrepreneur and community-minded philanthropist is recognized for his unwavering support of the healthcare system.
Over his 17-year association with South Shore Health, McKim has donated $16.9 million in support of pivotal projects such as the expansion of inpatient units in South Shore Hospital's Emerson building, the creation of the Dana-Farber Brigham Cancer Center at South Shore Health, and the construction of a state-of-the-art critical care unit, named in honor of Richard and Joann Aubut.
“Alan is a true champion of the South Shore Health mission, which aims to deliver high-quality, compassionate, and connected care close to home,” said Allen L. Smith, MD, MS, President and CEO of South Shore Health. “Our entire community is fortunate to have him as a visionary supporter.”
McKim’s earnest desire to solve problems, led to his most recent impactful gift to South Shore Health: A $5.3 million donation from the McKim Family Foundation to help double the capacity in South Shore Hospital’s short-stay unit for both inpatient and observation care.
“Our Emergency Department and our Level II Trauma Center are among the busiest in the state,” added Lauren Spencer, Senior Vice President and Chief Development Officer, South Shore Health. “This gift will help bolster and expand upon the resources we need to respond swiftly to the most advanced and complex critical care needs of our community.”
From South Shore Health to the South Shore YMCA, McKim makes a practice of supporting local non-profits that provide invaluable services to the community.
An advocate for Father Bill’s & Mainspring, NVNA & Hospice, and Wellspring Multi-Service Centers, McKim’s generosity touches many institutions, including Mass Maritime Academy and his alma mater, Northeastern University’s D’Amore-McKim School of Business.
“Mr. McKim personifies the essence of this award,” explained John F. Donovan, CFRE, President of NEAHP. “Through sharing his time, talent and treasure, he is a true ambassador for South Shore Health, ensuring the community has access to the best healthcare in the region. We are honored to recognize him with this year’s Distinguished Service to Philanthropy Award.”
