South Shore Health System offers screening with low-dose computed tomography (CT)—the only recommended screening for people at high risk for lung cancer. Research shows that screening using a low-dose CT scan can help detect early lung cancer before clinical signs or symptoms become evident. Our program is a designated Screening Center of Excellence by the Lung Cancer Alliance and has been designated a Lung Cancer Screening Center by the American College of Radiology.

Who Is Eligible for Screening?
All health plans cover lung cancer screening for individuals who meet the following criteria:

  • Must be between 55-77 years old
  • Current smoker or quit within the past 15 years
  • Smoked a least one pack of cigarettes a day for 30+ years
  • No history of any cancer within the last five years
  • Document lung cancer screening counselor with your health care provider

Most health insurance plans cover lung cancer screening for those that meet the eligibility requirements with a referral from a primary care physician. Follow-up care required after the exam should also be covered by insurance including Medicare/Medicaid. We will verify and work with your doctor’s office to get insurance authorization.
