Expanding Men's Health Services: South Shore Health Offers Innovative, Minimally Invasive Treatment for Patients with Enlarged Prostates

South Shore Health is pleased to offer Aquablation® therapy, an advanced, minimally invasive treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as an enlarged prostate.
By bringing this innovative technology to the region, South Shore Health is expanding access to specialized men's health care, giving thousands of local patients a highly effective treatment option closer to home.
BPH is one of the most common health conditions affecting men as they age. Symptoms include frequent urination, urgent urination, waking up at night to urinate, difficulty starting or stopping urination, and a weak urine stream, all of which can negatively impact overall quality of life.
Approximately one in two men over age 50 experience BPH symptoms; nearly 90% of men are affected by age 80.
Aquablation therapy is the first and only ultrasound-guided, robotic-assisted, heat-free treatment for BPH. The procedure precisely removes obstructing prostate tissue while helping preserve the anatomy responsible for urinary continence, erectile, and sexual function.
According to Luke O’Connell, MD, Interim Cheif of Urology at South Shore Health, the innovative procedure effectively treats patients with both small and large prostates, making it a comprehensive solution for most men experiencing BPH symptoms.

Until now, patients seeking Aquablation therapy often had to travel to facilities in Boston. It is estimated that more than 16,000 patients on the South Shore may benefit from the procedure.
