A bone density scan is a way to measure the strength of your bones and helps determines if you have osteoporosis—a medical condition in which the bones become brittle and fragile and are more likely to break. The test, also called a DEXA scan, is a type of X-ray. The test is quick and non-invasive and is the most accurate method used to diagnose osteoporosis.

A bone density scan requires little to no special preparation. Leave jewelry at home and wear loose comfortable clothing. You should not take calcium supplements for at least 24 hours before your exam. A written order from your physician is required specifying the need for this procedure before you schedule an appointment.
