Wound Experts Share Approaches to Care with Visitors from Côte d'Ivoire

For the second time this year, visitors associated with the AfriMed Network, based in Braintree, Mass., visited South Shore Health. On this most recent tour, they learned from experts at the Center for Wound Healing.

Dr. Kanga Kuome, who has a specific interest in plastic surgery and wound care, was given a tour of the center where leading wound diagnostic and treatment methods, including hyperbaric oxygen therapy, are used to heal the most complex wounds.

Dr. Kuome was a guest of the AfriMed Network, a charity which funds free healthcare in the Côte d’Ivoire to support people who cannot afford basic medical services.

Dr. Kuome had the opportunity to meet with two Wound Center providers, Lisa J. Gould, MD, PHD and Thomas D. Baer, DPM who work on a multi-disciplinary team of experts which provides specialized care to treat complex wounds that may have resisted health for month or even years – such as burns, pressure sores and severe infections.

The team also treats patients who are affected by wounds from diabetes, radiation therapy, trauma or other medical conditions.

The tour was led by Karen Donahue, RN, BSN, Nurse Manager at the Center for Wound Healing. The group was accompanied by two AfriMed staff members, Ray Koffi, Chief of Operations Officer, Africa and Rod Fritz, Director of Media Relations.

Earlier this year, a delegation from AfriMed visited South Shore Hospital to learn about the procurement of medical equipment, supplies and pharmaceuticals.
