South Weymouth, MA – October 3, 2018 – “My dad was diagnosed with lung cancer and treated at South Shore Health System” said Jennifer Ryan, a Scituate resident who ran the 2017 and 2018 Boston Marathon as part of Team SSHS.  “It was important to me that all my fundraising went to local cancer care and services in my community.”

Jennifer is an example of a community member who feels deeply connected to helping cancer patients on the South Shore. Her teammate, Christine Polcari, MD, is equally as passionate.

In 2013, my vibrant 55-year-old mother was diagnosed with plasma cell leukemia. She lost her battle with cancer and I lost my best friend,” said Polcari, a pediatrician at South Shore Medical Center and two-time Team SSHS runner. I can think of nothing better than raising money to support the programs and missions of the Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Center in clinical affiliation with South Shore Hospital MA."

There’s still time for you to become a member of South Shore Health System’s Team SSHS and train to run the 2019 Boston Marathon! All of the proceeds raised will support the many patients and families in our region battling cancer.

This is the eighth year South Shore Health System will field a Boston Marathon team. Last year alone, Team SSHS raised $192,000 in support of cancer care programs on the South Shore – which was enough to push the team’s collective eight-year fundraising goal to over $1 million dollars!

Thanks to the ongoing partnership with the John Hancock Non-Profit Marathon Program, South Shore Health System has been assigned 15 numbers for this year’s team! And, for the second year in a row, South Shore Health System will partner with the Marathon Coalition™.

The Marathon Coalition™ supports a collection of education- and health-based charity running teams prepare for the Boston Marathon by:

  • Providing a training program customized to each individual runner’s needs and goals.
  • Offering training runs scheduled every Saturday morning on some part of the Marathon course.
  • Opportunities to learn from and train with runners from other Boston Marathon charities.
