Going the Distance: Team South Shore Health Raises $150,000 in the 2021 Boston Marathon
This year’s Team South Shore Health – running “As One” in the Boston Marathon - has many reasons to celebrate! Despite an unprecedented year coupled with an unusual autumn marathon, the team raised $150,000 for cancer care, behavioral health and substance use disorder services on the South Shore. The final amount pushes the team’s collective ten-year fundraising goal to over $1.5 million!
“The funding we receive from Team South Shore Health is critical to the operations and so many other programs at our Cancer Center,” said Jen Croes, Executive Director of the Dana Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center in clinical affiliation with South Shore Hospital. It is truly remarkable to have a team of runners willing to pound the pavement for us. We are incredibly grateful to them and to John Hancock for supporting us.”
“We are extremely grateful to our team of runners who are making a tremendous impact in our community,” said Todd Kerensky, MD, Director of Addiction Medicine Services at South Shore Health. “The funds they raise allow us to provide patients with access to care, support programs, and mental health and SUD resources unavailable elsewhere in our region.”
Since 2012, South Shore Health has been able to field a Boston Marathon team as an official Partner of John Hancock in the Marathon Non-Profit Program - thanks to their ongoing support each year, the program has supplied bib numbers to Team South Shore Health runners – making their dream to run the Boston Marathon possible.
This year, 14 runners on Team South Shore Health fulfilled or exceeded their fundraising goals, which included the following programs:
- Supporting the implementation of behavioral health and substance use disorder services and initiatives within the Grayken Center for Treatment at South Shore Health.
- Cancer care at the Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center in clinical affiliation with South Shore Hospital.
