Dr. Allen L. Smith joins the Massachusetts Health and Hospital Association's Board of Trustees

Allen L. Smith, MD, MS, President and CEO of South Shore Health, was recently voted onto the Massachusetts Health & Hospital Association (MHA) Board of Trustees. The MHA serves as the united voice for the commonwealth’s hospitals and health systems.

“Dr. Smith is an exemplary voice for the needs of patients and caregivers -- both on the South Shore and beyond,” said MHA President and CEO Steve Walsh. “We are honored to welcome him to the MHA Board at this critical time for Massachusetts healthcare. His three-plus decades of leadership and innovation will be invaluable as we write the next chapter of care delivery in the commonwealth.”

As a member of the MHA Board, Smith will help the MHA support the healthcare system’s efforts to deliver high quality, equitable, and affordable care for everyone who calls Massachusetts home.

“I am honored to have been elected to the MHA Board of Trustees and grateful for the opportunity to serve alongside esteemed colleagues and contribute to the MHA’s mission of driving positive change for a healthier commonwealth,” Smith said. “I am committed to leveraging my experience as the leader of one of our state’s busiest community healthcare systems to support the Board in advancing high-quality, equitable and innovative care for patients and families across Massachusetts.” 

MHA’s Board of Trustees steers the direction of the association’s advocacy efforts on Beacon Hill and Capitol Hill, while carrying forth the state’s longstanding legacy in healthcare innovation. In the coming year, the MHA Board will remain especially focused on supporting and growing the healthcare workforce, easing the capacity pressures being felt in every healthcare facility, and setting a national standard in the march toward health equity. 

Allen L. Smith, MD, MS is President and CEO of South Shore Health. Previously Dr. Smith was President of the Brigham and Women’s Physicians Organization (BWPO), a faculty practice plan for over 1,800 physicians. Earlier in his career, Dr. Smith served as Assistant Vice President for Strategy and Business Planning at Tufts Health Plan. He began his medical career as a primary care physician at North Shore Medical Center.

Dr. Smith earned his Master of Science degree in Health Administrative Medicine and Population Health from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He earned his Medical Degree at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He has a BA from Dartmouth College, graduating magna cum laude.
