Community Benefits

Since 1922, South Shore Health has been a good corporate citizen, responsive employer, and considerate neighbor to the communities we serve.

We continuously work to support the principles of Massachusetts healthcare reform, improve the management of chronic diseases, reduce disparities in the provision of care, promote wellness in vulnerable populations, and sustain vital health services.

We work in collaboration with three of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health's Community Health Network Areas by supporting and funding community health initiatives sponsored by:

Providing Support & Wellness Education to Our Community

South Shore Health provides emergency skills training to first responders and community groups; often supplying these groups with tools such as the overdose reversal medication, Narcan, and tourniquets for immediate trauma response.

We regularly plan and participate in collaborative emergency preparedness exercises with community public safety departments.

Our Walk to Wellness program provides a safe place to walk at the Hanover Mall and South Shore Plaza and includes free health screenings and monthly talks from our clinical experts on important health topics.

Giving Back to the Community We Serve

South Shore Health makes a voluntary annual Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) that currently totals more than $700,000 per year. This voluntary payment has grown 400 percent in the past decade and qualifies South Shore Hospital as the largest “taxpayer” in the area.

We participate in a number of important organizations that contribute to the quality of life in the area, such as the Rotary Club, the Columbian Square Business Association, and the Weymouth Chamber of Commerce.

Contributing to the South Shore Economy

South Shore Health is one of the largest employers on the South Shore. We utilize more than 100 local businesses, providing millions of dollars in additional economic activity throughout the area.

Our facilities support public safety communication equipment and we provide improvements to enhance traffic safety at several busy intersections in town.
