It is an honor to have patients place their trust in my hands. I strive to provide excellent care throughout a patient’s entire hospital stay, be it in the ED, OR, ICU or ward. Outside of work I enjoy spending as much time as possible outside with my family and friends.

It is such an honor and privilege to be a physician.  It has been especially gratifying to devote my career to the field of Hospital Medicine, and to work at South Shore Hospital to help serve my community. 

Being hospitalized is often one of the most challenging and frustrating experiences a person can have. As a Hospitalist, what is so rewarding is that I can use my training and abilities to make such difficult times for people more compassionate and less confusing. 

Outside of the hospital, I love spending time with my wife and young son and traveling.  I also love anything to do with the outdoors and enjoy running.

Being a physician is an honor and a privilege I have enjoyed since graduating from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1979.  As my patients know I am interested in your life, your passions and the Orthopaedic issues that frustrate you and how I might be of assistance to you.  Surgery is not always a solution.

I take care of newborn infants and their great grandmothers.  In an era of sub-specialization, I am the "silver haired" General Orthopaedist but have maintained my surgical skills and remain confident in my abilities.  I have been fortunate to have treated multiple generations of my friends and neighbors here on the South Shore and work in a hospital committed to clinical excellence and compassionate care.

I have been a proud member of the Hospitalist group at South Shore Hospital since its inception in 2000. I believe that patients can benefit from a dedicated group of hospital physicians who work in conjunction with the primary care physicians and specialists in the community.  

Outside of work, I enjoy most sports and outdoor life with my family on a small farm in Southern New Hampshire.

Dr. O'Brien is Medical Director of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at South Shore Health. 

As a Maternal-Fetal Medicine physician, I am dedicated to caring for women and families navigating high-risk and medically complex pregnancies with expertise, compassion, and individualized attention. 

I strive to integrate evidence-based medicine with a holistic approach that recognizes the physical, emotional, and social factors that shape each patient’s experience. 

I am also committed to advocating for equitable healthcare and improving access and outcomes for marginalized and underserved communities.

My goal is to care for our patients as we would our loved ones: with expertise, compassion, and respect.

I grew up in the Chicago area and graduated from University of Chicago before moving to Boston for medical training at Boston University, followed by residency at Boston Medical Center.

I have been a hospitalist attending physician at South Shore Hospital since 2012. I married in 2006 and have two girls.
