South Shore Hospital’s Straight “A” Safety Streak Continues
While the COVID-19 pandemic has challenged health care systems worldwide and nationally, South Shore Hospital, part of South Shore Health, has earned an “A” safety grade rating from The Leapfrog Group, a designation that ranks the hospital among the safest in the Greater Boston area and the United States. The fall 2021 rating marks the sixth consecutive time that South Shore Hospital has earned the group’s highest safety grade.
"COVID-19 has presented some very serious challenges for health systems and healthcare workers,” said William C. Johnston, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of South Shore Health. “I am proud of this organization for consistently putting safety and quality first. Receiving an ‘A’ grade from the Leapfrog Group – especially this year - validates and demonstrates the commitment of South Shore Health, its physicians and colleagues to the health of our patients and our community.”
South Shore Hospital’s safety and quality measurements also included top-tier services which are unique to the region, including:
- The first and only verified and designated Level II Trauma Center south of Boston (including the Cape and Islands).
- The first and only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit located in a community hospital in Massachusetts.
- The first and only 24-hour Obstetrics Emergency Department in the state.
- The only hospital in Southeastern Massachusetts with 24-hour access to primary angioplasty, a life-saving heart treatment.
The Leapfrog Group is an independent national watchdog organization that assigns an A, B, C, D or F grade to general hospitals across the country based on over thirty national performance measures. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and harms to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public.
“An ‘A’ Safety Grade is a tremendous achievement, of which this community should be extremely proud,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “I thank the leadership and workforce of South Shore Hospital for its commitment to prioritizing patients and their safety, especially during these trying times.”
