South Shore Hospital Named 2021 Leapfrog Top Teaching Hospital

South Shore Hospital, part of South Shore Health, has been named one of the nation’s best teaching hospitals by the Leapfrog Group, a top healthcare watchdog organization that evaluates providers based on rigorous quality and patient safety standards. Four hospitals in Massachusetts, including South Shore Hospital received the Top Teaching distinction.
The highly competitive award recognizes hospitals based on their performance in a number of areas, including infection rates, practices for safer surgery, maternity care and capacity to prevent medication errors.
“It is an honor to be recognized as one of the top teaching hospitals in our nation and in the region,” said William C. Johnston, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of South Shore Health. “To be highlighted in this distinguished group underscores South Shore Health’s deep commitment and dedication to superior quality and safety. This recognition validates and demonstrates our ‘safety first’ approach and consistency in practice.”
More than 2,200 hospitals were considered for the award and only 72 received a Top Teaching distinction, including South Shore Hospital. Three other Massachusetts hospitals, Berkshire Medical Center, Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Marlborough Hospital, also received the Top Teaching distinction.
To qualify for the award, hospitals must rank top among peers on the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, which assesses hospital performance on the highest standards for quality and patient safety.
In November 2021, South Shore Hospital earned its sixth consecutive “A” safety grade rating from The Leapfrog Group, a designation that ranks the hospital among the safest in the Greater Boston area and the United States.
