Watching snowflakes swirl and fall can be peaceful.

Watching people swirl and fall to the ground due to snow and ice? Not so much.

Falls are a leading cause of injury for our Level II Trauma Center, and falls can become more likely during winter weather due to snow and ice, particularly black ice.

Below, you can find a series of tips to help prevent injuries from slips and falls during the winter:

  • Plan errands for when driving and walking conditions are safest. If you must go out, consider waiting until the sun has been up long enough to improve traction and visibility.
  • Wear sturdy, well-fitting footwear with good traction.
  • Take slow, short steps and keep your center of balance steady.
  • Keep your hands free to help maintain your balance.
  • Use handrails on stairs and walkways.
  • Choose cleared, well-lit paths whenever possible.
  • Avoid rushing, as most falls happen when people are in a hurry.

Snowflakes will fall, but you don't have to!

A little planning and patience go a long way toward staying safe this winter.
