South Shore Hospital, part of South Shore Health, has once again earned an “A” safety grade from The Leapfrog Group, a designation that ranks the hospital among the safest in the Greater Boston area and the United States.

The spring 2022 rating marks the seventh consecutive time that South Shore Hospital, celebrating its 100th anniversary, has earned the group’s highest safety grade. Nearly 3,000 hospitals were graded, reflecting performance on more than 30 evidence-based measures of patient safety.

“As we continue to build our independent, regional health system, South Shore Hospital will consistently seek ways to strengthen our culture and build reliable systems and processes to support our care providers in delivering the highest quality, safety and patient experience,” said Carol Keohane, MS, BSN, RN, Senior Vice President, Chief Quality and Safety Officer, South Shore Health.

“Just as our hospital’s founders believed in consistent, compassionate patient care, the entire team at South Shore Health continues to have a unified vision for offering exceptional care close to home and a sustained commitment to patient safety.”

The news of a seventh straight “A” comes during a celebratory month for South Shore Hospital as it recognizes its 100th anniversary. For a century, the hospital has built an enduring legacy of expertise and service to its community. Earning another Leapfrog “A” grade solidifies its longstanding commitment to patient safety.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and harms to patients. The independent watchdog organization assigns an A, B, C, D or F grade to general hospitals based on over thirty national performance measures. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public.

South Shore Hospital’s safety and quality measurements include top-tier services unique to the region, such as:

  • The first verified and designated Level II Trauma Center south of Boston (including the Cape and Islands).
  • The first and only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit located in a community hospital in Massachusetts.
  • The first and only 24-hour Obstetrics Emergency Department in the state.
  • The only hospital in Southeastern Massachusetts with 24-hour access to primary angioplasty, a life-saving heart treatment.

“I thank the workforce and leadership of South Shore Hospital for sustained commitment to patient safety, day in and day out,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “An ‘A’ Safety Grade is an outstanding achievement, and one that is not possible without a 24/7 effort by the entire health care workforce to protect patients from harm. This community should be proud.”
