South Shore Health is pleased to announce it has been awarded ultrasound practice accreditation in Fetal Echocardiography – a specialized form of ultrasound used to diagnose cardiac conditions in the fetal stage.
The health system is the only healthcare organization in southeastern Massachusetts to have earned this recognition.
The Ultrasound Practice Accreditation Council of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) awarded South Shore Health this accreditation for many exceptional reasons, including high-quality ultrasound trainings, specialized physicians and sonographers, ultrasound equipment maintenance, and technical quality and interpretation of sonograms performed.
“We are thrilled to receive this recognition from the AIUM,” said Kim Dever, MD, Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at South Shore Hospital and Vice President of Medical Affairs at South Shore Health. “Achieving this accreditation for Fetal Echocardiography further enhances South Shore Health’s Maternal Fetal Medicine services and fosters our belief in continuity of care, patient safety, expedited treatment, and better outcomes for pregnant women and their babies.”
In addition to earning Fetal Echocardiography accreditation, South Shore Health was also re-accredited for standard obstetrics ultrasound (first, second, and third trimesters).
Cardiac defects are amongst the most common birth defects. In most cases, Fetal Echocardiography can help detect these conditions while babies are in-utero. Early diagnosis is important, as it can help providers and parents-to-be develop treatment plans once a baby is born.
Receiving accreditation for Fetal Echocardiography adds to South Shore Health’s long-list of extraordinary programs and services, including:
- The first-of-its-kind Obstetrics Emergency Department in Massachusetts which is available to any mother over 20-weeks pregnant and experiencing a pregnancy-related emergency.
- Southeastern Massachusetts’ only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
- The first hospital in the country to partner with Ariadne Labs for the “Team Birth Project” – an initiative that empowers women to communicate their birth plan and share in the decision-making process during childbirth.
