Staying Safe: Tips for Extreme Cold

During periods of extremely cold weather, including days with dangerously low wind chills, it's important to take precautions to stay safe.

Stay indoors

Limit outdoor activity as much as possible, including for pets.

Dress appropriately

If you do go out, dress in several layers of loose-fitting, lightweight clothing instead of a single heavy layer. Wear water-repellent outer garments, a hit, mittens, and waterproof boots.

Use caution with appliances

Follow the recommended safety precautions for your space heater, fireplace, or wood stove. Keep a fire extinguisher handy.

Beware of carbon monoxide

Ensure that your generator or secondary heating system is in a well ventilated space.
