South Shore Health today announced that U.S. News & World Report has ranked South Shore Hospital among the state’s top ten Best Hospitals for the 2022-2023 reporting year. South Shore Hospital, which recently celebrated its 100th anniversary, is ranked 7th in the Metro Boston area and 9th in Massachusetts due to its ongoing high-quality, compassionate care.

“South Shore Hospital’s long-standing strength comes from the many communities it serves and its mission to offer premier, world-class care close to home is unwavering,” said Allen L. Smith, MD, MS, President & CEO, South Shore Health. “As we continue to build a dynamic, independent regional health system, South Shore Hospital will consistently seek ways to provide compassionate, high-quality patient care, offer cutting-edge technology, and implement top-tier services and programs unique to the region. I am extremely proud of our colleagues and medical staff who have earned this designation. We celebrate all that makes South Shore Hospital and all of South Shore Health a wonderful place to work and seek care.”

In addition to making the U.S. News & World Report Honor Roll, South Shore Hospital earned a “High-Performance” score in the adult specialty of Urology, as well as eight common adult procedures/conditions including:

  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Colon Cancer Surgery
  • Diabetes
  • Heart Attack
  • Heart Failure
  • Kidney Failure
  • Lung Cancer Surgery
  • Stroke

“Our top rankings reflect the expert, compassionate care that our medical staff and colleagues provide to our patients, their families and our community. We also take great pride in investing in technologies and equipment, such as our two new MRI machines and a new CT scanner, which are critical to our vision for delivering the highest quality, efficient, and safe care to our patients,” said William C. Johnston, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of South Shore Health. “Receiving high rankings from U.S. News & World Report demonstrates our commitment to superior quality and comprehensive care, so we remain the first place that South Shore residents turn to for their health and wellness needs.”

Currently, South Shore Hospital operates one of the largest emergency and maternity services in the commonwealth, including the state’s first and only 24-hour Obstetrics Emergency Department, as well as the first and only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit located in a Massachusetts community-based hospital. It is a verified Level II Trauma Center and the only hospital in Southeastern Massachusetts with 24-hour access to primary angioplasty, a life-saving heart treatment.

Recognized as a Magnet hospital for its stellar nursing program, the hospital joins the ranks of prestigious health care organizations serving as the gold standard for nursing practice.

Additionally, South Shore Hospital has earned the highest recognition for its quality care, including seven straight “A” grades from The Leapfrog Group, rating it among the best in Greater Boston and in the U.S. for safety.

“The hospitals named to the U.S. News Honor Roll excel across numerous specialties and service lines,” said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News.  “When patients and their medical professionals are considering their options for care, the rankings are designed to help them identify hospitals that are superior in the kind of care they may need.”

Using a variety of measures such as survival rates, complication rates, patient experience and level of nursing care, U.S. News evaluated the performance of more than 4,500 hospitals across 15 specialties and 20 procedures and conditions. The state and metro area rankings reflect the highest performing hospitals in the area across multiple areas of care.

“For 100 years, the commitment of extraordinary caregivers and colleagues, bold leaders and unwavering donors, volunteers and supporters, have enabled the hospital to flourish,” added Smith. “South Shore Hospital’s enduring legacy of medical expertise, compassion, and service to its community has set the bar for our next 100 years.”
