South Shore Health today announced that U.S. News & World Report has ranked South Shore Hospital among the state’s top ten Best Hospitals for the 2021-2022 reporting year. South Shore Hospital is ranked 6th in the Metro Boston area and 8th in Massachusetts, making it the highest-ranked community hospital in the state due to its ongoing high-quality, compassionate care.

I am extremely proud of our colleagues and medical staff who have earned this designation for providing our community with high-quality care close to home,” said Allen L. Smith, President & CEO of South Shore Health. “We applaud all of our caregivers who have shown great skill and dedication to their profession, not only in the midst of a pandemic, but while adapting to a rapidly evolving industry. This distinction also honors our deep history of service to the South Shore as we look forward to celebrating our centennial as an independent healthcare system in 2022.”

Additionally, South Shore Hospital earned a “High-Performance” score in the adult specialty of Urology, as well as five common adult procedures/conditions including:

  • Diabetes
  • Heart Attack
  • Heart Failure
  • Kidney Failure
  • Lung Cancer Surgery

“Our top rankings reflect the expert, compassionate care that our medical staff members and colleagues provide to our patients, their families and our community,” said William C. Johnston, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of South Shore Health, the parent organization of South Shore Hospital. “Receiving high rankings from U.S. News validates and demonstrates our commitment to superior quality and comprehensive patient care, so we remain the first place that South Shore residents turn to for their health and wellness needs.”

As a top-ranked community hospital, South Shore Hospital offers exceptional services that are unique to the region, including:

  • The first and only verified and designated Level II Trauma Center south of Boston (including the Cape and Islands).
  • The first and only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit located in a community hospital in Massachusetts.
  • The first and only 24-hour Obstetrics Emergency Department in the state.
  • The only hospital in Southeastern Massachusetts with 24-hour access to primary angioplasty, a life-saving heart treatment.

For the 2021-22 rankings and ratings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,750 medical centers nationwide in 15 specialties and 17 procedures and conditions.

“This year’s report includes new ratings for important procedures and conditions to help each patient pick the right hospital for the type of care they need,” said Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News. “Hospitals faced incredible challenges this past year, and the best of them have provided great care throughout the pandemic and continue to offer excellent care today.”

The U.S. News Best Hospitals methodologies are based largely on objective measures including risk-adjusted survival and discharge-to-home rates, volume, and quality of nursing.

This year’s high rankings from U.S. News follow South Shore Hospital’s Beacon Silver Award for Critical Care Excellence, awarded by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) in July. This marks the third consecutive year that South Shore Hospital’s Critical Care Unit (CCU) has received the honor, which recognizes improvement in patient and family outcomes, as well as overall satisfaction. South Shore Hospital is one of only two CCU’s in Massachusetts to receive the association’s Silver Award for the 2020-2023 period.
