South Shore Health has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for both Hospital and Home Care Accreditation.

The Gold Seal of Approval® is bestowed to healthcare organizations that demonstrate continuous compliance with healthcare performance standards and reflects South Shore Health’s commitment to providing safe and effective patient care.

“Earning Joint Commission accreditation recognizes the tremendous work our South Shore Health colleagues do day-in and day-out to provide high-quality, reliable, patient-centered health care,” said Allen L. Smith, President & CEO of South Shore Health. “This successful survey is a testament to our health system’s commitment to ongoing efforts in assuring patient safety.”

An independent, not-for-profit organization, The Joint Commission is the nation's oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in healthcare.

To earn and maintain its Gold Seal of Approval®, an organization undergoes an on-site survey by a Joint Commission survey team at least every three years.

In October 2021, South Shore Hospital and South Shore Health’s Home Care Division, comprised of South Shore VNA and Hospice of the South Shore, underwent a rigorous, unannounced onsite review by The Joint Commission.

Expert surveyors evaluated compliance with hospital and home care standards related to several areas, including emergency management, environment of care, infection prevention and control, leadership and medication management. The Joint Commission also conducted onsite observations and interviews.

Joint Commission accreditation is the gold standard in the healthcare industry, and to know that our Home Care Division has achieved this is significant,” said Jann Ahern, Vice President of Home & Community Care Operations, South Shore Health. “This ensures that our patients and their families can trust they will receive the highest level of clinical care in the comfort of their own homes.”

“As a private accreditor, The Joint Commission surveys health care organizations to protect the public by identifying deficiencies in care and working with those organizations to correct them as quickly and sustainably as possible,” said Mark Pelletier, RN, MS, chief operating officer, Accreditation and Certification Operations, and chief nursing executive, The Joint Commission. “We commend South Shore Health for its continuous quality improvement efforts in patient safety and quality of care.”
