Peter Hasham's Story

South Shore Hospital’s Total Joint Replacement Program

Peter Hasham

If joint pain is ruling your life, it’s time to see an experienced specialist. At South Shore Hospital, our orthopedic team is dedicated to restoring functionality and independence to those patients suffering with joint pain, by ensuring the best possible outcome throughout the course of treatment. South Shore Hospital has fellowship-trained and board-certified experts who specialize in every joint — including hips, knees, shoulders and wrists. They offer the very latest procedures, including minimally invasive options, and they’re part of the orthopedic program that’s ranked as high performing by U.S.News & World Report.

In the past, doctors reserved total joint replacement surgery primarily for people over 60 years of age, with the thought that outcomes would be more successful because that age group is typically less active — therefore, putting less stress on the artificial joint. Today, however, improved materials and technology have led to increased longevity of joint implants. Joint replacement offers a solution and means to restore ability to be productive in the workplace and enjoy recreation.

Norwell resident Peter Hasham returned to Michael Ayers, MD, for a total knee replacement at the end of January, after having two successful total hip replacements in 2012. “Before my first hip replacement, I remember being fearful, not certain what recovery would be like,” Peter said. “However, because my experience was so amazing, I was actually excited to have my knee surgery, remembering how quickly I became pain-free after my hip surgeries,” Peter said.

In Peter’s situation, determining whether to undergo another total joint replacement, though a big decision — became one of necessity. Due to his family history of osteoarthritis and the physical demands of working as a contractor, joint replacement was the best solution. “Problem free joints are crucial to my job. Dr. Ayers and the entire team have been encouraging me to play an active role in my own recovery — always there guiding me every step along the way,” Peter said.

Michael Ayers, MD, is among the talented group of orthopedic surgeons at South Shore Hospital, practicing at South Shore Orthopedics, LLC, located in the outpatient Center for Orthopedics, Spine and Sports Medicine at 2 Pond Park Road in Hingham. He, along with our entire team of board-certified surgeons and talented nursing and rehabilitation staff specializing in total joint replacement, bring comprehensive care to our region, making our total joint replacement program a destination for patients looking to find advanced care.
