South Shore Health System and Health Express, one of the leading providers of urgent care on the South Shore, recently announced that they have signed a letter of intent to enter into partnership, bringing cost-effective treatment options for patients with non-life threatening injuries and illnesses.
“This is an incredibly important step towards our continuing evolution from a hospital to a community-based Health System,” said Gene E. Green, MD, MBA, President/CEO, South Shore Health System. Health Express operates seven urgent care centers, with locations from Quincy to Plymouth.
“This partnership is about meeting the needs of an ever-changing health care landscape, and we are excited to be part of how health care should be delivered now and into the future,” said Green. “Health Express has established a reputation for clinical excellence, and this is an opportunity to work together for patients and families on the South Shore.”
Urgent care centers allow patients to see a clinician without an appointment, and are best used for injuries and illnesses that need the attention of a medical professional but not necessarily the Emergency Department. Health Express is well-regarded for its patient-centric focus and clinical staff expertise, evidenced by robust growth and high satisfaction rates.
Health Express was founded in 2012 at its flagship site in Weymouth, and now includes locations in Abington, Kingston, Pembroke, Plymouth, Quincy and West Roxbury. South Shore Health System operates one of the busiest Emergency Departments in the Commonwealth, with more than 95,000 visits annually. Both Green and Chris Whelan, MD, owner of Health Express, see the opportunity to partner as a big win for consumers.
“This new partnership will help alleviate some of the burden on South Shore Hospital’s busy Emergency Department, and give patients an option that will save them time and money for care that is closer to home,” said Whelan. “We are thrilled to join an organization that has a shared vision for the health of the communities we serve.”
On Tuesday, February 27th, more than 100 Presidents’ Circle members and guests enjoyed the annual “Night at the Boston Bruins” event at the TD Garden. Our guests enjoyed food and refreshments in the Garden View Suite and two additional suites in the Premium Club and witnessed another exciting victory for the Bruins over the Carolina Hurricanes.
Carl Robinson, Vice President of Wilmington Trust, represented his firm at the event and really enjoyed the evening. “South Shore Health System went above and beyond bringing its Presidents’ Circle members together for a fantastic event at the Garden,” he said. “It was great to have a chance to reconnect with friends from the south shore as well as everyone from Dr. Gene Green, to other prominent south shore business leaders. That and an overtime win by the Bruins certainly enhanced the evening!”

South Shore Health System is so fortunate and very excited to announce Bob and Donna Pineau as two of our honorees that will be recognized at the 7th annual Luminaria – Lighting the Path for Care in our Community, on Thursday, June 14th at 6:00 p.m. at Granite Links Golf Club in Quincy.
Luminaria is a special evening designed to raise support for South Shore Health System’s Home and Community Care division and to celebrate innovation and the dedication of members of our community nominated and recognized as “Champions for Home Care.” This year the Health System is proud to honor Bob & Donna Pineau as two of its Luminaria medallion recipients.
Both Bob and Donna are well known and highly respected leaders in our region. As the President and CEO of Electro Switch Corp. in Weymouth, Bob has carried on a long-standing tradition of support and partnership from the company. Bob also serves on our System Board and is Chair of our Finance Committee.
In the past 25 years alone, Electro Switch has supported the expansion of South Shore Hospital’s emergency services, the growth of maternity and surgical programs, the opening of the cardiovascular center, the launch of the Dana-Farber/Brigham & Women’s Cancer Center in clinical affiliation with South Shore Hospital and – most recently – the new Critical Care Unit.
Bob says it is easy to see why his company is such a substantial supporter. “I can’t tell you how many people I know who have benefited from South Shore Hospital,” Pineau said. “When you are really sick, or you know someone who is going through treatment, it makes such a difference to be able to get expert care close to home.”
Bob and Donna are long-time local residents. Donna is a registered nurse and her nursing career has spanned over 40 years; having spent many of them in varied roles in Home Care. She understands the value of Home Care as the best environment contributing to the patient’s health and wellness. Donna has recently focused her passion for patient care toward educating the next generation of care givers in our community. She is an Adjunct faculty member at Emmanuel College and Labouré College. Donna is currently pursuing her PhD at Simmons College, with her dissertation focused on the importance of teaching caring to the nursing students pursuing master’s degrees.
Over the years, the Pineau family has generously funded health services our community now depends on. As they see it, “It is up to us in the community to support the Health System in some way, so we can be sure the care we need remains available when we need it.”
Additionally, for the first time ever, our past Luminaria recipients nominated a group of nurses who work in Home Care. Our Parent Child Health Team will be honored for the care they provide our young patients and their families. Accepting the award on their behalf will be their Nurse Manager, Joyce Cox, RN, who has been with our Home Care division for 38 years!
Luminaria focuses on home care services, which play a vital role in lowering overall health care costs, minimizing complications, preventing multiple hospital stays for patients and improving the quality of life for the people in our region. “Providing care in the comfort and familiarity of one’s own home for a variety of medical needs is why Luminaria, in support of home care, has become such an important event,” said Gene E. Q: What is your belief in maintaining strong community values and how does that philosophy influence your business?
A: A community is only as strong as the values we share. At Envision, we talk a lot about our values, one of them that I think transcends our business into how we support and engage the broader community is “Do the Right Thing.” As simple as it sounds, if we apply that to almost every decision we make, whether in business dealings, decisions regarding our colleagues at work, actions within our communities, it all comes down to “Do the Right Thing.” When we do that, everything else falls into a healthy progression.
