McKim Family Makes $5 Million Gift

For the second time in five years, Alan S. McKim and the McKim Family Foundation have made an astonishingly generous gift to help fund the strategic vision of South Shore Health System. The South Shore Health System Foundation recently announced a transformational $5 million pledge in support of the current capital campaign, now in its quiet phase. This capital campaign is raising needed philanthropic support for facilities, equipment and programs. The focal point of the campaign is a new, state-of-the-art Critical Care Unit, presently under construction above the existing three-level Messina Center. Mr. McKim is the Chairman and CEO of Clean Harbors, headquartered in Norwell. He founded the company in 1980 with just four employees and a pick-up truck in a garage in Bridgewater. He and his family foundation have become the most generous donors in the Hospital’s 95-year history, and their gifts are among the largest ever made to a community health system in Massachusetts.

With this latest display of generosity, Mr. McKim chose to honor the former President and CEO of our Health System, Richard H. Aubut, who retired after 27 years of service in late 2015. “The Hospital has changed for the better in numerous ways over the course of the past 15 years or so,” commented Mr. McKim. “While thousands of people have contributed to this dramatic transformation, a visionary leader is a key element in any organization making such considerable changes. It is for that reason and so many more that we are pleased to honor Richard Aubut for his years of dedication and commitment to the people of the South Shore.” As a result, the new Critical Care Unit will be named for Mr. Aubut and his wife, Joann, whom he always credited for supporting him throughout his career. The Richard and Joann Aubut Critical Care Unit is scheduled to open in late 2017. The McKim’s gift is the latest in a long line of generous contributions from the family. Prior campaigns have included seven-figure pledges in support of the Maternal/Newborn program and the Emerson Building inpatient expansion project. “Alan McKim and his family are true philanthropists in every sense of the word,” commented Chris O’Connor, Senior Vice President of Philanthropy.

“They have supported higher quality health care for the South Shore consistently over the past decade. It is an absolute fact that we would not be where we are today without their inspiring generosity. Words cannot adequately describe our level of gratitude to Alan and his children, all of whom serve as Trustees of the McKim Family Foundation.” Mr. McKim will serve as Honorary Chair of the current capital campaign. Now in its quiet phase, a public campaign announcement is anticipated for late 2017.

Presidents’ Circle Members and Guests Enjoy Bruins Game

Almost 100 members of South Shore Health System's Presidents’ Circle and guests celebrated a big Bruins 4-1 win over the Nashville Predators on March 28. The game was a great opportunity to network with fellow business leaders while watching an exciting game. "The Bruins game is the Presidents' Circle event I look forward to every year." said Ben Strong, Chief Operating Officer, The Vertex Companies. "It was a great game and a great night to see so many business leaders involved with the hospital. This year, I brought a friend along who isn't a member, and he was really impressed and thinking about joining. It was a fun event."

"As such, we truly appreciate the extraordinary generosity of our Presidents’ Circle members. 2017 Team to Run for Cancer Care

South Shore Health System is proud to field another Boston Marathon team and honored again to be part of the John Hancock charity program. John Hancock donates hundreds of guaranteed entries each year to select non-profits, which use these entries to recruit runners who raise money for their causes. Our Health System has recruited 17 runners for Team SSHS. “We’re so grateful for John Hancock’s continued support and for our dedicated team of runners,” said Gene E. Green, MD, MBA, President and CEO, South Shore Health System. “Running as one, their efforts make a real difference in the lives of our friends, neighbors and families who are fighting cancer.

All Marathon team proceeds support cancer care provided across our Health System. Funds raised support the latest diagnostic technology, advanced surgical procedures, comprehensive inpatient care and access to clinical trials, new therapies and expert clinicians.

“I feel so fortunate to have South Shore Health System’s cancer care program so close,” said Duxbury resident Anne Marie Winchester, team captain and a member of Team SSHS for five years. Anne Marie, who is also a Foundation Trustee and a member of the Friends’ Board, added: “It’s rewarding to know that all the money the team raises goes directly to people who need it.
