At the dawn of the 20th century, visionary community leaders established Braintree Visiting Nurse Association (now South Shore VNA) and opened Weymouth Hospital (now South Shore Hospital). Both organizations were founded on the belief that the people of the South Shore deserve local access to high quality health care.
Some years later, five physician leaders established an innovative group practice called South Shore Medical Center. They were among the first to move beyond the traditional solo-practitioner practice model, combining their talent and resources in pursuit of better patient care.
Today, South Shore Hospital, South Shore VNA, South Shore Medical Center – as well as other not-for-profit organizations – are now part of a larger organization called “South Shore Health System.”
Philanthropy remains fundamental to the successful fulfillment of our Health System’s charitable mission. The generosity of our donors helps fund the facilities, equipment and programs our patients and families need.
In recognition of philanthropy’s importance to our Health System, our Foundation Trustees have changed the name of our fundraising organization to South Shore Health System Foundation.
The new name underscores our Foundation’s long-standing commitment to generate philanthropic support for all of the programs provided by South Shore Health System and its charitable subsidiaries. The name change also signals our future intent to fund programs that promote good health, in addition to those that meet our community's medical needs.
It is an exciting time to be involved with South Shore Health System. Thanks to you, we are expanding our capacity to care for patients and families where and when they need it.
